Charleston spent most of its history as an industrial area, nicknamed Kreischerville after a brick factory that ran until 1927. Today Veterans Road West is its main retail corridor, anchored by Bricktown Centre at Charleston, an open-air center with big-box stores and restaurants. Arthur Kill Road, the West Shore Expressway and the Korean War Veterans Parkway link it to the rest of the South Shore and the Outerbridge Crossing.

Commercial and industrial land still covers much of the neighborhood, including warehouses and the MTA's Charleston bus depot.
